The Wise Kids
Brooklyn, United States
NYC Theatrical Premiere, One Week Only!
*** Writer-Director-Costar STEPHEN CONE
in person Fri. 3/16 + Sat. 3/17 ***
"[CRITICS' PICK!] A tenderhearted gem. To call THE WISE KIDS a Christian movie or a gay movie, or even a gay Christian movie, would be to force a label on this touching, low-key drama with no axes to grind. Unfailingly kind to its characters, THE WISE KIDS is devoid of the evangelical versus secular rhetoric of today's culture wars that seeps into most movies addressing religion."
- Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES (read here)
Included on Four BEST OF 2011 Lists:
- Michael Phillips (CHICAGO TRIBUNE)
- J.R. Jones (CHICAGO READER)
- Gary Kramer (SLANT MAGAZINE / INDIEWIRE)
- Rob Christopher (CHICAGOIST)
"Sexuality and spirituality make for oddly natural bedfellows in Stephen Cone's gentle, authentic THE WISE KIDS. Equally generous to all of its characters in a way that seems borderline radical for an American indie, this is a becalmed work about roiling emotions... Through his patient naturalism, Cone achieves a balance of finely wrought character study and observant sociology."
- Michael Koresky, REVERSE SHOT (read here)
"A lovely ensemble piece! Cone, who also wrote and directed the movie, has a real gift for conveying emotion through looks and body language... The organic feel of the interactions, the authenticity of the dialogue, and the respect for all the characters -- including the kids' loving and supportive parents and their sometimes not so understanding siblings -- gives THE WISE KIDS the feel of thinly fictionalized autobiography. Cone clearly knows and loves this place and these people, and we wind up feeling as if we know them too.
- Elise Nakhnikian, THE L MAGAZINE (read here)
"Among the best of a recent spate of dramas observing American Christian life... featuring a brilliant cast of young actors."
- Robert Koehler, VARIETY
"Honest, observant and subtle... Cone is adept at body language, eye contact, nuance, and suggesting people's instinctive sympathy."
- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
WATCH THE TRAILER:
Writer-director Stephen Cone's THE WISE KIDS is a "lovely new drama" that the Chicago Reader's J.R. Jones also called "one of the best movies I've seen this year." Winner of two Grand Jury Awards at Outfest (and the Audience Award at NewFest), the thoughtful and evocative festival fave makes its NYC theatrical premiere with a week-long run, March 16 - 22.
In a Baptist church community in Charleston, South Carolina, three teenage friends contemplate the next stage of life after high school, a scary time when life seems to be all questions and no answers. Introspective pastor's daughter Brea (Molly Kunz) experiences debilitating doubt. Her hyperactive best friend Laura (Allison Torem), however, is a devout believer. Tim (Tyler Ross), the openhearted son of a single father, is confronting his homosexuality for the first time.
Weaving comedy and drama, THE WISE KIDS is a character driven, coming-of-age story with an extraordinarily talented young cast. Tensions and buried feelings abound, as colleges are chosen and adults behave badly, and Brea, Laura and Tim attempt to hang onto what they have, all the while yearning to break free.
